“How much does a custom web application cost?” is the first question every NZ business asks us - and the one almost no developer will answer on their website. Here are the real ranges we quote, and what moves a project between them.

These assume a NZ-based developer or studio. Big consultancies charge 2-4x these numbers; offshore teams charge less but you carry the communication and quality risk yourself.
What actually drives the cost
User accounts and roles. The moment different people see different things - customers vs staff vs admins - complexity roughly doubles. A public calculator is cheap; a portal with logins isn’t.
Integrations. Each system you connect (Xero, Shopify, a payment gateway, a government API) adds work, but this is usually the highest-payback spend in the whole project. We cover the common patterns in connecting your business tools.
Design expectations. An internal tool your staff use can be functional and plain. A customer-facing product needs proper design - budget 15-25% of the project for it.
The unknowns in your process. The biggest cost blowouts come from discovering mid-build that “oh, actually we handle rural deliveries differently.” A good developer spends real time understanding your process before quoting - that’s why we scope before we price, and then quote fixed.
How to keep the cost down
- Start with the painful 20%. Don’t rebuild everything - automate the one workflow that hurts most, prove the value, then extend. Working software in 6 weeks beats a big-bang launch in 8 months.

What “cheap” actually costs
The $3k web app from an offshore marketplace is real - we’ve been called in to rescue several. No tests, no documentation, security holes, and a developer who’s vanished. The rebuild always costs more than doing it properly once. If a quote seems too good, ask to see something they built two years ago that’s still running.
