Website prices in New Zealand vary enormously, from a few hundred dollars for a DIY template to tens of thousands for a complex custom build. The right number for you depends on a handful of practical factors.
What actually drives the cost
1. How many pages and how much content. A simple five-page site costs far less than a 50-page site with multiple content types, case studies and a blog.
2. Design - template or custom. Starting from a template is cheaper and faster. A custom design that reflects your brand and is built to convert visitors into customers takes more time, but tends to pay for itself.
3. Functionality. A brochure site is one thing. Add online bookings, payments, a customer login, or integration with your other systems, and you’re into custom software territory.
4. Who builds it. A global template service, a local freelancer, and an experienced studio all price differently - and you generally get what you pay for in speed, security and support.
The hidden costs to watch for
The sticker price isn’t the whole story. Ask about:
- Hosting - cheap shared hosting is slow and insecure; quality cloud hosting costs a little more but is worth it.
- Maintenance - websites need updates, backups and security patches. Who’s doing that?
- Ownership - make sure you own your domain, content and code, with no lock-in.
Getting real value
The cheapest website is rarely the best value. A slow, insecure site that doesn’t show up on Google costs you customers every day - that’s far more expensive than getting it right the first time.
